About the District

Strategic Directions 2011-2020

The Puyallup School Board adopted the following strategic directions and goals for the Puyallup School District for 2011-2020 on September 12, 2011, to serve as the roadmap guiding the district as it makes decisions about student learning. This long-range strategic plan is based on the 2010-11 work of the Strategic Visioning Committee.

Strategic Direction 1

We will realize increased student achievement in all schools.

Goal 1.1. Increase and strengthen academic opportunities for all students leading to improved learning and graduation rates.

Goal 1.2. Study the strengths, challenges, and impacts of student learning in a middle school grade configuration model and report the findings for consideration by the board.

Goal 1.3. Identify, prioritize, and implement emerging instructional strategies and effective grading practices in order to improve student performance and close the achievement gap.

Goal 1.4. Develop and implement comprehensive early intervention, literacy, and math support for under-prepared students.

Goal 1.5. Strengthen counseling and advising services.

Goal 1.6. Develop a plan to increase student technology skills at all grade levels.

Goal 1.7. Implement a quality mentoring program for disenfranchised and low-achieving students.

Strategic Direction 2

We will support equity, equal opportunity, and high performance for staff and students.

Goal 2.1. Conduct hiring processes that result in a skilled, diverse, and culturally competent staff.

Goal 2.2. Implement a coordinated professional development program across the district in order to improve the skills and knowledge of all employee groups.

Goal 2.3. Identify measurable cultural competency skills and use to train staff, students, and families to realize and promote effective diversity practices.

Goal 2.4. Continue implementation of an effective employee evaluation system that results in high employee performance.

*Goal 2.5. Introduce early foreign language and cultural studies programs at the elementary level. (To be implemented when resources permit.)

Goal 2.6. Strengthen anti-bullying education and training throughout the district and community.

Goal 2.7. Plan strategies to strongly support and include identified ethnic and cultural groups to include staff, students, and community members.

Strategic Direction 3

We will be accountable to and engage with students, families, staff, and community members.

Goal 3.1. Use the results of the strategic visioning process to update the district’s mission, vision, beliefs, strategic directions, and goals.

Goal 3.2. Continue implementation and evaluation of the district’s communications plan.

Goal 3.3. Using multiple media and languages, strengthen internal and external communications between schools, families, and the community.

Goal 3.4. Continue to implement and evaluate a clear and effective process for decision-making throughout all levels of the district.

Goal 3.5. Develop, monitor, and report measurable outcomes to document progress toward district goals and initiatives.

Goal 3.6. Provide information regarding student learning results and graduate rates.

Goal 3.7. Promote community, business, and family partnerships to support district goals.

Strategic Direction 4

We will manage the use of district resources to achieve district goals.

Goal 4.1. Provide students a safe and appropriate physical learning environment. Open new, renovated, or relocated facilities on time and on budget; maintain current facilities to acceptable standards.

Goal 4.2. Examine and strengthen district practices for improved safety and security of students and staff.

Goal 4.3. Develop an integrated, equitable, districtwide plan to maximize the use of technology at all district locations.

Goal 4.4. Use an effective funding formula to maximize student opportunities and maintain a minimum five percent General Fund ending balance exclusive of carryover commitments.

Goal 4.5. Annually modify and align programs to meet anticipated revenue and balance the budget.

Goal 4.6. Promote community and business partnerships in order to leverage funding, facilities, and internship opportunities.

Goal 4.7. In preparation for bond and levy initiatives, communicate the state of the district’s facilities on an ongoing basis.
