Concussion Information
The new state Sports Concussion Law requires that schools annually require all athletes and the parents/guardians of athletes to sign and return an information sheet related to the nature and risk of concussion or head injury. This information sheet includes the signs and symptoms of concussion or head injury.

Information about the district's secondary athletic program for 2009-10
The 2009-10 recommended budget proposes a cost savings by changing the seventh- and eighth-grade athletic program from an interscholastic to an intramural program.
In working with district coaches, the district has been able to identify other reductions that result in a savings of $80,000 which enables the district to retain its seventh- and eighth-grade interscholastic program for the 2009-10 school year.
This change has been approved by members of the Puyallup Extra Curricular Athletics and Activities Association (PECAAA) and ratified by the Puyallup School Board on June 22. Therefore, the district’s seventh- and eighth-grade athletic programs will remain as interscholastic for 2009-10 while a comprehensive review of the secondary athletic program is undertaken.
A study group will be commissioned next year to examine the entire secondary athletic program. This study group will develop recommendations for the configuration of the district’s athletic programs that will be more cost-effective. In August, the district will be accepting applications for individuals to serve on the study group.
New athletic eligibility standards
Students who want to participate and/or compete in sports or selected extracurricular activities (see chart below) in fall 2009 must pass a minimum of five classes and maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average this semester. This change takes effect in fall 2009, but it applies to the grades students earn in spring 2009.

Athletic Fee
Students who participate in junior high or high school athletics pay an athletic fee to help offset fuel costs, official fees, and equipment costs. Athletes pay the fee for each season in which they participate — fall, winter, and spring. The fee is paid at each school as part of the athletic registration process. The fee is waived or reduced for students who qualify for the district’s free and reduced-price lunch program.
Fees are as follows:
| |
General |
Reduced |
| Junior High |
$30.00 |
$15.00 |
| High School |
$60.00 |
$30.00 |

Physical Exams for Interscholastic Athletics
A physical examination is required prior to the first practice for participation in interscholastic athletics. According to a new ruling by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), most physical exams are valid for 24 months rather than the previous 13 months.
The physical exam must stipulate that the athlete is cleared for competition specifically at the junior high level — or for competition at the high school level. For example, a physical exam obtained as a junior high ninth grader within the past two years must indicate that the athlete is also cleared for high school competition if the athlete intends on participating as a tenth grader in his or her new high school.
