Veterans Day is Nov. 11 and although schools are closed, students and staff are actively honoring and celebrating those who protect and preserve our liberties as a nation. Our schools will be virtually honoring Veterans all throughout the month of November through special assemblies and student activities. To all Veterans and branches of service, thank you!

District COVID-19 Data
As we return small groups of students onsite, it is our goal to keep families informed of positive COVID cases impacting schools and district facilities. Protecting the privacy of individuals in this process is an important element.
When we are notified of a positive COVID case, we contact Tacoma Pierce County Health Department (TPCHD) so contact tracing can immediately be conducted. Based on the guidance provided by TPCHD and the school COVID-19 case response tool kit, notifications are sent to impacted staff, students and families.

Reopening Schools: Phase 3
Although we remain in phase 3, there has been a small increase in small groups of students receiving onsite services. We are committed to providing services for our most vulnerable students, particularly those with fewest supports at home. Early learners, in particular, face unique challenges as they navigate distance learning and work on literacy and numeracy skills online. As such, District leaders have been asked to continue discussions on how we can bring additional early learners back in small groups while we remain in Phase 3.
The Instructional Taskforce has reconvened to evaluate our two instructional models (CDL2.0 and Hybrid In-Person) with a goal to make recommendations on what to start, stop, and continue doing to make instruction as effective as possible for students. Your feedback is valuable in this process. Please remember to participate in our Continuous (Distance) Learning survey and tell us how it’s going. Families and students are encouraged to submit feedback on learning platforms, progress reports, student workload and more.
In closing …
Cases are increasing as we head into colder weather. As of November 10, the Pierce County COVID-19 infection rates average 155.8 per 100K people over 14 days with the six-day lag and 197.5 in real time. The percent of tests that are positive is at 5.2 with a goal of <5%.
We have a collective responsibility to slow the spread as our schools are constrained by county data. The DOH Decision Tree continues to outline how and when we can bring additional students back for in-person instruction.
