High schools in the Puyallup School District have teamed with the NFHS Network to provide streaming services of athletic events held in their gymnasiums and turf fields. With the installation of automated Pixellot cameras in these venues, fans will have the ability to view fall sport contests during season 1 in volleyball, girls soccer and football that are held on the main gym floor and on the turf field at each school. These broadcasts will be scheduled for all events in these venues involving varsity, junior varsity, and C-Team contests. Other sports available later this year include track and field, boys soccer, boys and girls basketball, gymnastics and wrestling. The technology also allows for assemblies, musical performances and other events held in these venues to be broadcast.

The NFHS Network service has two subscription options, including a monthly subscription for $10.99 a month or an annual pass for $69.99. Similar to other streaming services the events can be watched on a variety of devices: any computer web browser, Apple and Android cell phones and devices, Roku and FireTV devices. Annual subscriptions give the viewer the best price point, along with the potential to view more than one season of sports over the next year. Those with students participating in multiple sports that will be broadcast or who may have a 2021-22 season within the 12 months could benefit from the annual subscription. Based on the number of subscriptions per school the NFHS Network will share the revenue produced by subscriptions back to the schools this year with restricted in-person attendance at events.

During the 2020-21 school year three other SPSL schools will use the NFHS Network: Bellarmine Prep, Gig Harbor HS, and Peninsula HS. This gives subscribers access to NFHS Network broadcasts at six of the ten SPSL schools. The remaining four SPSL schools may have other options available for viewing contests at their venues.

pixellotThe technology of Pixellot cameras allows for a pre-scheduled, automated broadcast that follows the action of the contest. On-air commentary is not planned at this time however the audio of the game and announcer will be available on the broadcast. The use of Pixellot cameras is new to the Puyallup SD, though it has been successful at hundreds of schools nationwide the past few years. NFHS Network donated the cost of the Pixellot cameras and installation for the Puyallup SD high schools.

Our schools are exploring how to stream events that are held in other venues, including the pools and outdoor events. Sports that are held outdoors provide the biggest challenge to live streaming as they require large amounts of data. Network cabling and Wi-Fi limitations are challenges being explored to offer broadcasts of other sports in the future.
