AP Capstone

What is AP Capstone?

AP Capstone is an Innovative program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork and communication skills valued by colleges.

AP Capstone was developed in response to feedback from higher education. The two AP Capstone courses, with their associated performance tasks, assessments, and application of research methodology, complement the rigor of AP courses and exams by challenging students to:

  • Think critically and creatively to construct meaning or gain understanding
  • Plan and conduct a study or investigation
  • Propose solutions to real-world problems
  • Plan and produce communication in various forms
  • Collaborate to solve a problem
  • Integrate, synthesize, and make cross-curricular connections

Why are we implementing AP Capstone in Puyallup?

  • AP Capstone fits our philosophy of increasing access, belief, and skills.
  • AP Capstone increases our AP classes/offerings, promotes AP opportunity for sophomores AND pushes system to create opportunity at JHS.
  •  AP Capstone builds on the “Academic Brand” for Emerald Ridge High School, Puyallup High School and Rogers High School; and Puyallup School District.
  • AP Capstone provides highly capable program continuation and coordinates the AP experience at PHS into a prestigious and integrated diploma program.

Students will continue to take Advanced Placement courses and we will add two additional “Capstone” courses, AP Seminar (Capstone 1) and AP Research (Capstone 2).  Students successfully complete both Capstone courses and four other AP classes (with a 3 or better test score), will earn an AP Capstone Diploma. Students will be able to choose to take AP Seminar (Capstone 1) as their Sophomore English class in the Fall of 2017 and AP Research (Capstone 2) in their junior/senior year.

What are the benefits of AP Capstone?

  • Fosters the research, argumentation, and communication skills that are at the core of college readiness and essential for lifelong learning.
  • Provides a setting to build on the knowledge and rigorous course work of AP in an interdisciplinary format.
  • Offers students a unique opportunity to distinguish themselves to colleges and universities.
