Early Learning FAQs

What is the age range for PSD's early learning programs?
- Birth – 3 services for children with developmental delays who live in the Puyallup School District may be available through Pierce County Human Services

- Children between the ages of 3 and 5 who are not yet of kindergarten age may be eligible to participate in PSD early learning.

What if my child is currently
has an individualized education program (IEP) and we are moving here from another district?
- If your child is currently has an IEP and is already eligible for special education services, call PSD Special Services at (253) 841-8700. Once records can be reviewed and placement and eligibility are determined, directions for enrollment will be arranged with the parent.

What if I suspect my child may have a developmental delay? (e.g., communication, cognition, physical, social/emotional skills, adaptive self-help skills)
PSD offers free developmental screening during the school year for children between the ages 3 and 5 who are not yet kindergarten age and live in district boundaries. These screenings address suspected developmental delays for preschool-aged children in the  areas listed above. Vision and hearing screenings are also administered. For more information or to schedule a screening appointment, call PSD Special Services at (253) 841-8700.

If there are concerns regarding the development of a child under the age of 3, free screenings and services are available to Puyallup School District residents. For additional information regarding these screenings/services, call Pierce County Human Services  at (253)798-3790 or [email protected].

What if I believe my child is typically developing, or progressing similarly to other children their age, but hasn’t yet had a formal school experience?
PSD's Kindergarten Academy (KA) is a 20-week, transitional program designed to assist young learners between the ages of 4 and 5 who would benefit from additional support to be successful in kindergarten. This free program runs January through June every year and is available to families who meet our program requirements. For more information, contact Kris Wilkinson at [email protected] or call (253) 841-8784.

What if I believe my child demonstrates advanced skills for their age?
Starting in fall 2022, families with children who turn five years of age after August 31 may be eligible for early entrance to kindergarten. Washington State law requires that children must be at least five years of age on or before August 31 to enroll in kindergarten. Puyallup Early Entrance to Kindergarten (PEEK) is an opportunity for children with a birthdate between September 1-30 to be considered for early entrance to kindergarten if they meet certain requirements.
Note: PSD Early learning is no longer accepting applications for PEEK for 2022.
