Spring is a great time to pause and think about new growth. I recently went on a walk noticing the many varieties of plants and wildlife right in my own neighborhood; trees blossoming, grass growing and birds chirping. Trees may take years to mature while some plants only have a season. For me, the sights and smells of spring are truly invigorating.
This made me think of the change and growth our school system has endured. Our ‘growing season’ has been a full year of development. Perhaps not as invigorating as a springtime walk, the growth that our system has undergone has given me a newfound appreciation of teaching and learning. Staff members are revamping alternative learning options, teachers have grown in their professional learning, and students have learned adaptive skills to serve them now and in the future. Our collective progress amazes me. It has truly been more than just a season of growth for all of us.
As education evolves, so does our appreciation for teachers of all kinds. This year in particular, teacher appreciation has taken on a whole new meaning. Teachers help our students bloom, grow and thrive. Always, but especially in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week May 3-7, I want to express my deep gratitude to our teachers for their continued efforts to serve students and families.
Please join with me in celebrating teachers and the unanticipated learning that has taken place these last several months. What may be perceived as learning loss this year, is an incredible opportunity for growth and renewal.
In service and support,
Dr. John Polm
