With an interest in providing students and families with greater flexibility in childcare services before and after school, the Puyallup School District has been exploring options available from a variety of vendors. As a result, each of the 21 elementary schools will soon offer childcare from a new provider called Right At School.

On February 7, 2017 the PSD Board of Directors took action on a recommendation to consider entering into a contract with the new childcare vendor to support families at each elementary school. Currently, 11 schools host the YMCA which transports children from 16 of the schools.

Providing more options for families has been an interest of the directors of the school board and an idea coming from leadership in the district’s PTA Council. When researching vendors the committee was most interested in a program which is:

  • Designed for students in preschool through grade six.
  • Aligned to academic standards that offer a continuum of services.
  • Housed in all elementary schools.
  • Flexible in payment options for families.
  • Able to provide childcare from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm.

The nationally recognized after-school enrichment provider, Right At School will begin providing services during the 2017-18 school year. Informational community meetings will take place on Thursday, March 16 at the Pioneer Park Pavilion. Two identical meetings have been scheduled for 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Although the current before and after school childcare vendor, the YMCA, is unable to meet the established criteria, they will continue to provide services through the end of the current school year. The district has appreciated the partnership over the past several years.

Parents currently using the YMCA childcare services may need assistance during the transition. For this reason, a new webpage has been established on the school district’s website. Parents can visit the Childcare Options webpage to find helpful information about the new vendor and the options they provide.

In addition to meeting the criteria listed above, Right At School will provide:

  • Options range from one day a week to five days including morning or afternoon or both.
  • 10% discount for military families.
  • 10% discount for siblings.
  • 20% discount for families who qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Along with the scheduling flexibility and financial discounts, Right At Home has its own Director of Curriculum who will work directly with the school district’s leadership to ensure an optimal academic experience. The curriculum will feature hands-on learning, multi-sensory activities, child-driven projects, daily fitness, team building, and leadership development.

The Puyallup School District is looking forward to working with parents, students, and Right At School personnel to provide a safe, fun, and challenging academic before and after school option for families.
