Ferrucci Junior High’s Builders Club took first place in Kiwanis scrapbook contest.

Ferrucci’s Builders Club focuses on community service and is sponsored by the Puyallup Kiwanis.

Kiwanis International is a non-profit international coeducational service club founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan.

Ferrucci’s Builders Club which had over 169 active members in the 2015-16 school year participated in various community service events throughout the year.

Gina Greaves, a digi tools teacher at Ferrucci and Builders Club advisor, said the scrapbook is just one of the many Kiwanis competitions in which the club participates. The scrapbook is a culminating project which encompasses all of the community service the Builder Club does throughout the year.

Almost every month the Builders Club is making a difference in the community. Community service projects include a clothing drive for the St. Francis House, a food drive for the Puyallup Food Bank, a cops versus teachers fundraiser, and serving quarterly at the Mountain View Community Center.

Eight students participated in meeting weekly to work on the scrapbook.

One student who worked on the scrapbook, Bryanne McCoy, said, “I’ve been in the community service club for three years. It was an amazing experience, and we were really excited to win.” McCoy earned her varsity letter for serving over 150 hours of community service as a ninth grader.

Greaves explained, “Kiwanis has certain requirements. It is not just a photo album, the scrapbook consists of many things such as newspaper articles and original artwork from students. There is a list of strict requirements, and you have to show service.”

Three years ago Ferrucci’s Builders Club took third place in the international scrapbook contest, last year they took second place, and this year first place.

The winning scrapbook was displayed at the 2016 Kiwanis International Convention in Toronto.
