Contractor selected to build new Sunrise Elementary

The community will soon notice exciting changes on the west side of the Sunrise Elementary property. The general contractor for the replacement school building has been chosen and construction is scheduled to begin in May.

The Sunrise construction project was open for bids on April 17 and FORMA Construction came in with the lowest bid. The Puyallup School Board approved the bid on April 19. The bid came in $1.0 million lower than the original estimate.

Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2019. The new building will have 30 homerooms with the capacity for 730 students—this is 262 more students than the current building.

Behind the scenes work has been ongoing since the bond was passed in November 2015. The architect was chosen, a Bond Oversight Committee was formed, Educational Specifications were developed and approved by the Puyallup School Board. A Design Advisory Team was formed to give input for the design for the new building.

Thanks to the voter approved  $292.5 million 2015 School Construction and Facility Improvements bond, a new elementary, replacement schools for Firgrove, Northwood, and Sunrise, a Pope remodel, and a 12 classroom addition at Hunt are in the works.

“Our bids have been phenomenal. Five of the six bids for the 2015 bond package, have been opened and have come in less than the budgeted amount. The construction market for these bids has been very competitive, and Puyallup has experienced some positive results compared to other school districts. We are very proud of our capital projects team for their detailed work and preparation for each bid, it truly has been a team effort” said Chief Operations Officer Mario Casello.
