Elementary students compete in yearly track meet

If you were anywhere near Sparks Stadium during the afternoon of June 5, you probably noticed lots of excitement and activity going on.

The annual Lloyd Morgan Invitational Elementary Track Meet took place in the afternoon, with more than 1,000 Puyallup area students competing in a variety of track and field events.

Morgan, who started the event in 1986, was on hand to lead student representatives from each of the schools onto the field for the opening ceremony and help organize events.

Fifth and sixth grade students from each of the district’s elementary schools, Chief Leschi, and sixth graders who attend Aylen, Ballou, Edgemont, and Ferrucci junior high schools, competed in the ball toss, 50- and 100-meter dash, and relay races.

Superintendent Tim Yeomans served as the official for the running events. He welcomed the crowd during the opening ceremony. Meeker Principal Patrick McGregor and Fruitland Principal Melayne Jones were this year’s event coordinators.

“The track meet is a great opportunity for students to feel successful,” says Jones.
