Hunt teachers tour new classroom addition

Hunt Elementary teachers received their first look at the new 12 classroom addition during a guided tour on June 11. Led by Judy Piger, director of educational planning and Les Gerstmann, assistant director of construction, teachers learned about the unique classroom environment and had the opportunity to explore and ask questions.

On hand for the tour were Principal Rebecca Williams, Region 1 Chief Academic Officer Dr. Christine Moloney, and Assistant Principal Jeanine Medvedich.

The classrooms are being prepared and furniture is arriving in anticipation of the fall 2018 opening. Teachers will move into their new classrooms in August. The classrooms, which seamlessly adjoin to the rest of the school, will house fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students.

Hunt staff“It’s all about learning. There is a lot of thought that went into the classroom design,” says Judy Piger, director of educational planning. Piger and Gerstmann guided the staff through the classrooms. They provided an overview of the classroom space and pointed out some features incorporated into the new classrooms.



Piger highlighted key learning components designed into the classrooms:

  • Project rooms for collaboration and small groups
  • Improved technology (which has been incorporated into all classrooms at Hunt)
  • Four sit/stand desks with wheels
  • Work tables that raise to allow a standing position
  • Two charging stations for computers – each will charge 20 computers

Piger said the technology strategically placed in the room was piloted at Edgerton Elementary in order to learn what works best for students. It includes an interactive flat panel at the front of the classroom and a display panel in the back. A sound system with a microphone for the teacher will increase the likelihood that all students will clearly hear the instruction from anywhere in the classroom.

“These rooms are intended to provide an environment for cooperative learning groups. The layout was designed with students in mind,” said Piger. She encouraged the teachers to design a layout that works best for them. The desk placement should be configured to meet instructional needs.

“All of our decisions are made with a Response To Intervention (RTI) and professional development learning commitment, and with students in mind. All decisions will be made based on what’s best for kids,” said Williams. A leadership team is currently working to determine priorities and use of the space.
