The public is invited to attend local community meetings where proposed school boundary changes for the Puyallup School District will be presented. Nearly every school in the district will be impacted by the changes — elementary, junior high, and high school.

Information and feedback meetings are scheduled at each of the 31 schools having an attendance boundary. Parents will receive an invitation to attend at their student’s school, and meeting schedules will be posted on the district website.

Meetings will begin at 6 p.m. and last for one hour. During that time participants will sit face-to-face with others from the community to share their thoughts and opinions. Conversation will be guided by district administrators sitting at each table.

To ensure all voices are heard, parents and community members are encouraged to provide comments or suggestions regarding the proposed boundary changes using the ThoughtExchange online discussion tool. It also allows users to rate comments of others. 

The student population and demographics of the district have changed significantly since the last formal boundary review took place more than 10 years ago. Current projections show an increase of more than 1,300 students in Puyallup Schools by the year 2023.

This is an important time for the district to review and improve each of the school’s boundaries. Significant enrollment growth, six new and expanded elementary schools approved by the 2015 School Construction and Facility Improvements bond that are scheduled to open in 2019 and 2020, state goals for K-3 class size reduction, and other district initiatives impact enrollment distribution.

A boundary review committee was commissioned by the school board in 2016 to evaluate and make recommendations to adjustments of school attendance areas for elementary and secondary schools. In compliance with District Policy 3130, District Attendance Areas, the committee was tasked to seek to provide equity throughout the district by considering:

  1. Minimizing disruption of students' established learning programs;
  2. Maintaining established neighborhood groupings;
  3. Ensuring the stability of the feeder school concept as much as possible;
  4. Coordinating transportation routes with attendance areas;
  5. Geographical features of the area;
  6. Safety in transportation;
  7. Walking conditions;
  8. Racial/ethnic/gender balance;
  9. Socio-economic balance; and
  10. Sufficient lead time to ensure effective implementation.

The 36-member committee, chosen to represent the geographical regions throughout the district and reflect on diverse needs, includes community members, parents, district staff, and students. There are nine community members—three from each region representing elementary, junior high, and high school. The group also includes five at-large community members and two Puyallup PTA Council representatives. District staff members include principals, chief academic officers, Transportation, Athletics Health and Fitness, Student Services, Special Services, Student Learning, and Equity and Achievement.

The committee serves as an advisory committee to the Puyallup School Board and will present a report with recommended boundary adjustments to the School Board on November 5, 2018. The report will consider possible options and identify benefits and challenges pertaining to them. Pending school board approval, implementation will begin in the fall of 2019.
