Work continues on classroom addition at Hunt Elementary

Additional classroom space at Hunt Elementary will house more than 275 students in the fall 2018. Staff and students are looking forward to 12 additional classrooms with six shared project rooms.

A time lapse camera allows the community to view progress.

The new construction meets Washington State’s green building standard for high performance buildings. This environmentally friendly design includes energy efficiency, daylighting, water conservation, storm water treatment, and sustainable materials.

The space will house fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students. Plans are under way to integrate the new classrooms, which will adjoin to the rest of the school as a seamless continuation.

Visitors to the school can expect to see a colorful graphic mural of words describing the school.

Hunt Elementary Principal Rebecca Williams says, “It will be really fun to look at a graphic representation of what our school is about.”

Moving out of portables and into the school building will improve time management for students and staff. They will have easier access to the library, gymnasium, lunch, and bathrooms.

Technology upgrades in classrooms include interactive flat panels at the front of the classroom and display panels in the back for easier viewing. Teachers can interact with the front panel using a tablet from anywhere in the room.

Classrooms will have audio systems to project the teacher’s voice throughout the room. According to research, student learning improves when they can hear the teacher more clearly.

The voter approved 2015 School Construction and Facility Improvements bond addresses the need for elementary school classroom space. It allows the district to replace Firgrove, Northwood, and Sunrise elementary schools, remodel Pope Elementary, build a new elementary school, and add 12 classrooms to Hunt Elementary.
