Earlier this year, Rogers High School 12th grade student Mason Carter won the 2023 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Wrestling Media Person of the Year Award.
Every year, at the WIAA coaches' meeting, attendees nominate a recipient for recognition of their work in media and promotion of the sport they coach. Carter creates social media content, short videos, and takes pictures for the RHS Wrestling Team and the programs they compete against, bringing recognition to the sport.
When Carter learned he won, he saw it as more recognition to add to his portfolio.
"I was excited because I had another thing to add to my resume," Carter said. "The award helps me continue and work harder on my promotions and digital media career."

It comes as no surprise that Carter understands how promoting sporting events can help reach a broader audience beyond the RHS Wrestling Community.
"Without sports marketing, people don't know about smaller sports events," Carter said. "With football and wrestling, we put all of our promos on social media and YouTube, and we repost it so more people can see it. Our wrestling team has had a lot more eyes on our program since then."
Carter's post-graduation plans include attending Bates Technical College for photography and digital media to expand his knowledge of cameras and graphic design.
